(Page 14) This book is packed with ideas and action steps for every reader. I highly recommend it. As long-time readers of my blog may know, I started this web log of reviews partially to help me find work. I do not know how much it’s helped, but it’s certainly kept me busy! My current work assignment is probably ending at the end of October, so this is a good time to start working on my next job search.

I do not know how much it’s helped, but it’s certainly kept me busy! My current work assignment is probably ending at the end of October, so this is a good time to start working on my next job search. And what better way to start that preparation than by reading a book?
In this case, I have to hand the latest volume from Richard Bolles’ series of job hunting manuals, now in its fortieth year. It opens on two chapters on what’s new in the job search environment, with the still sluggish economy and the ever-increasing importance of the internet. You may want to fix your Google search results even before writing your physical resume! This is followed by a chapter on what remains the same about trying to find open positions. One of the biggest takeaways here is that most job seekers want to use the methods that require the least time spent–it’s exhausting looking for work! But most employers want to use the hiring methods that reduce their risk of wasting money on a bad choice, which tend to cost the job seeker the maximum investment of time and effort. (Especially if you are terrible at making new friends and connections.) There are chapters on interviewing and salary negotiation (first person to name a specific figure “loses.” This is followed by a chapter on things to try when nothing else has worked.
Which brings us to the heart of Mr. Bolles’ job hunting advice. By carefully examining who you are and what you really want to do, you can narrow down your search to jobs that are best fitted for you, and thus you are likelier to be hired for.
He’s got some very specific methods for the reader to try. This technique, I am told, is quite successful and one of the reasons this book has stayed in print so long. And if you can’t find anyone hiring in the exciting new job field you’ve decided to try, there’s a chapter on starting your own business. Then come the “Blue Pages”, the appendixes.
The first is on finding your “mission” in life, written from a Christian perspective (after all, Mr. Bolles was an Episcopalian priest for fifty years.) Those who find God-talk distressing may want to skip this chapter. This is followed by an essay on ways to deal with the negative emotions and feelings often caused by unemployment.

There’s a bit of religion in here, too, but it’s easily skipped over if you prefer, and much helpful secular advice. The next two appendixes go together, an essay on career coaches, and a listing of some of them around the world. Bolles is firm in pointing out that being listed here is not an endorsement, merely a notice that these coaches have put themselves forward to be noticed. If you’re going overseas, you might also want to look at the appendix of foreign editions specific to various countries.
There’s some material from and about the author, and a form to send in if you have any suggestions for the 2017 edition. We finish with an index, and listing of related books by Mr. Bolles if this wasn’t enough for you. It’s an attractively designed book, with a decent number of illustrations (I especially like the cartoon of the fellow who has no parachute of any color.) The writing is clear and comprehensible, obviously polished over the many editions of the book. It’s worth noting that many job hunting programs have taken cues from this series, so if you’ve been looking for work for a while, much of this will sound very familiar. And some people may find the tone a little too much on the positive side for comfort. There are very few examples of long-term failure in here!
Highly recommended to people looking for work, people who want a career change, people who suspect they may be looking for work soon, and college students about to enter the adult job market. (There’s a separate book aimed at teenagers.) Disclaimer: I received this book from Blogging for Books in the expectation that I would read it and write a review.
No other compensation was involved. The author cites quantified success rates of different strategies to help make his point.
Almost every word of this book is helpful. Not every tip will be useful for one person, but this is a comprehensive reference, and having this thorough, up-to-date guide is one of the best tools there could be.
That is, you don't have to apply every single thing, but just read it through – he made it quick and easy to read, and that's (one reason) why it's so good. What can I say that hasn't probably been said by other readers and reviewers? “What Color Is Your Parachute?
year” is highly effective, and its carefully designed formatting saves you from over-highlighting. It might be stuff you already know, but could hear again and try to act on. When something seems like it is only given a short explanation, read on, and you will most likely find more of what you wanted to see. He even refers to the page numbers to help you find these continuations. The only thing I found a little annoying was the constant mention of “since 2008,” when there has been, I believe, an edition of this book every year since then or close to that.
Also, the non-cartoon black-and-white sketches thrown in don’t always make sense, but are more like art hanging in an office space. The blue pages at the beginning of each chapter have sometimes relevant quotes, but capitalizing the first letter on each line makes them read as poetry rather than direct advice.
Chapter 7 and the flower exercise are arguably most valuable, and everything after that supports those exercises. The “blue pages” are appendices, which you can skip, especially if you’re not religious. “What Color Is Your Parachute?” is still an excellent reference book, hopeful and encouraging for all job seekers. This reviewer had not seen this book before, so one was able to give it a cold, neutral appraisal and overall one liked what one found. Understandably, if not frustratingly, a lot of the resources highlighted are more suitable for those seeking a job in North America, yet the advice as a general collection was quite credible, informative and potentially helpful. Of course, if everyone buys this book, then any competitive edge might be lost, but Sadly many people might be entering the job-seeking world quite late on in life, and many of the old tried and tested methods of job searching are no longer as relevant. It is a brave new – and harsh – world out there and one has to adapt and speak the same language as those who advertise a position and interview applicants. Some of the tips given are actually great “obvious” examples that can be used in other situations, such as if you’ve been given a time limit for an interview, set your phone to silent/vibrate and have a timer alert you a few minutes before your time is up, so you can wind up things and make an offer to leave. Of course, the interviewer may insist you stay to seal the deal!
This reviewer shall use the same trick at the next lecture he gives, as it is not always possible to see a clock on the far side of the hall. Of course, the tips are only obvious when you’ve been shown them. If you are looking for a job and need a bit of advice, you could do worse than check this book out. If your funds don’t permit it, check out your local public library and nag them until they get this book for you. It could be a great investment for many!

I haven’t gone through the petals exercise so my review is based solely on the content and not application of the method. I believe the exercise will be beneficial and eye opening, but as a person with a full-time career and a family, fitting in the necessary steps will be difficult and time consuming (hence my mention of those like me in the paragraph above). I decided I had waited long enough and needed to review the books’ content for now. My true intent for requesting an ARC of this book was for my son who is nearing graduation and has no idea what he wants to do with life and seems to struggle a bit with it. I’m actually hoping the content and exercises in the book will help HIM.
That is yet to be seen since getting him to read and apply the content will likely not be anything I can accomplish in the near future! The book definitely gave me a lot to think about and assess, whether now or later – you never know where the job market will leave you, right!? As it always has been, I think this book is a mainstay for those newly in the job market or quickly approaching it. I was provided with an ARC of this book by the publisher or author in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I am not compensated for any of my reviews.
What Color Is Your Parachute? Is one of those super-famous books on job hunting. It's updated every year.
It's split into two halves. The first half is for the traditional job hunter. It talks about resumes and interviews.
It talks about the job market right now, and explains how this process can be slow and difficult and highly inefficient-because, well, resumes just don't work that well, in the long run. But it goes through the process, gives tons of advice, and empathizes with you on the way.

Using his 'flower exercise' you figure out a ton of things: your favorite skills, your favorite people, your favorite job conditions, and a whole lot more. This is what you use to create your 'dream job'-the kind of jobs and kind of fields that would use the things you love the most. It's actually a cute title, but really it's a book that will give you the guidance to win any interview and reduce the need to job hunt because you will successfully achieve the job you want. That is if you take note of all the excellent tips and information inside this book! There are so interesting tips inside, each done in a way that it isn't boring or looks complicated to read. It's actually so colorful that it makes me interested, to learn how to get a job I want! Some of this info will cover how the job world worked way back then and how it works now. By saying that, I do agree that now all the employer has to do is Google the person online before hiring.
They can see from linkedIn or other social sites the person they are hiring and how they really acted in their other jobs or how highly rated they are. Therefore, it's always a good thing to look the part online and off when going for a job and this book will help you get there. Some more information covered would be the questions you'll be asked and how to respond, as it's a huge test the entire interview and also when you completed the interview to remember to send a thank you. That extra ending touch, a thank you card or something kindly sent is a nice way to win them over! Finally, there is so much more than the recent books covered, I'm sure since it's 2017 and even though I never read the others, I'm sure it has a few more additions added which are up to date. So just know you won't be left in the dark when it comes to interviews and how to have your resume online and off showing the right stuff the employers want to see and know about. I really found this book to be a great new guide for 2017, very up to date and something that will help me and anyone who is interested in acing the interview or finding that career you want, make it happen!

Bolles writes conversationally, which helped make reading this easy on the brain, but the subject matter is both technical and emotional, so I found myself skimming chapters that didn't necessarily apply to my situation or putting off reading chapters that seemed to understand me all too well. Favorite quotes: 'So it is, that in any situation you find yourself, no matter how overwhelmed you may feel, no matter how much you may feel you're at the mercy of huge forces that are beyond your control, some part of it is within your control.'
-p47 'You are a person, not a job.' -p115 'The more you see your own gifts clearly, the more you must pay attention to the gifts that others have.' -p239 Best tip: YOU are the given, the common denominator in your job search. So focus on yourself and what you offer. Think of yourself as a resource to any potential employer. This is something quickly forgotten in the drudgery of job hunting, and something I, personally, want to be more intentional about in future job hunts.
Recommended for: job hunters and career changers, employers and employees, college grads and retirees. Final thoughts: My brother read this book and got a job almost immediately afterwards. The book motivated him, gave him new ideas about how to job search, and made the entire process more of a puzzle to solve than an impossible challenge. I, on the other hand, read the book over the course of 4 months, in fits and starts as I was feeling up to it. I wanted to read it completely (doing each of the worksheets), but in the end I had to pause on those and just keep reading, or I would have been stuck on certain sections for too long. I'd advise any would-be readers to know themselves and their reading style, then use the book as a tool in whatever way best suits you. Not feeling a chapter?

Bolles agrees - Parachute is a reference, not a required read. Editor's Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I don't know. This book was recommended to me, but I have not found it very helpful. At least I am still unemployed. I did the flower exercises. They took long enough.
I confess I did not do the exercises in the next chapter, but asking your friends what they think your perfect job is, then tracking down people who do that and getting the information out of them what you need to do to get a job like that is a pretty difficult thing to do, and I doubt it would work. I have spent years and years studying and working hard to become more competent at what I did do and then to do what I wanted to do and I still can't get a job. I have no confidence in the shoulder your way in approach. In the end I felt it was like one of those self-help books, which if they don't work is because you did not have the courage and commitment to put their advice into action. The only advice I take out of it is not to give up.
The reason I did not give it fewer points is that I felt the author was very genuine. This book has a lot of helpful information on how to job search and conduct successful interviews! There's also a big section where you can work to figure out your ideal career path using the 'flower method.' The first few steps were good, but as I got further into the process, I had difficulty finding enough material about my life experiences to complete the exercises. I think more and more varied examples in the book would have helped me get a better idea of how to do it. That being said, I think anyone in the job search process or wanting to try to change their career path would benefit from the enormous amount of information in this book (which has been in print and revised yearly for decades!). There isn't much change from last year's version. As for the book itself, I found that it was a very helpful overall book for job hunters overall in the job market looking to brand themselves and branch into a new field or find a new way to look at the job market and launch themselves into a career.
I didn't find that it was much helpful for me in the career industry that I am in - marketing/advertising, ironically. Most of it was pretty redundant for me.
I bought this book to help me decide what job I wanted to do next. It asks you to go through a number of thought provoking and practical exercises which will eventually help you to clearly define your perfect career/job. Ironically, it demonstrated to me that I didn't want a job so much as more creative and professional freedom which was just as helpful, if not more, to me personally. What I like most about the PARACHUTE series is the author. If you don’t know it already, it will be clear after reading this book, that Richard Bolles is PASSIONATE about job search and advancing careers. His passion for the subject shows up loud and clear in this latest installment in the series. It is easy to see why this series has been so wildly successful.

It is easy to see why this series has been so wildly successful. Honestly, you would be absolutely NUTS to not read this book (or a recent edition.) The author has extensive experience in the field, and backs up his ideas with impressive evidence. That is, the recommendations here are not theoretical—they are founded in decades of experience. Furthermore, the material in PARACHITE is presented in a clear, easy to read format. There is one priceless section-do not miss 'Conversation Tips.' The author knows WHY the interviewer is asking you these questions! For example, Bolles notes in Tip #13 that 'Employers don't care about your past; they only ask about it as a way to predict your FUTURE behavior.” Simiarly, watch out when the interviewer suggests, 'Tell me about yourself.'
Bolles notes, 'How you answer that question will determine your fate during the rest of the interview.' This question if really a test of sorts, Bolles explains. What they are really doing is a sneaky “What experience, skills, or knowledge do you have, that are relevant to the job I am trying to fill.” Forget your hobbies and personal history.
This edition has updated suggestions on how to best use social/networking sites. In LinkedIn, for example, Mr. Bolles points out the importance of completely filling out your user profile, so that prospective employers can get an accurate picture of your qualifications. Bolles notes that surveys always show that not having a picture is a turn-off. Finding your mission in life will not be trivial-and it will not be quick. The author points out that being forced to find a job can also have beneficial effects on our whole life.
It offers 'a chance to make some fundamental changes in our whole life. It marks a turning point in how we live our life.' Some of the appendices will certainly be controversial, because the author (a former Episcopal priest) makes his own religious beliefs clear. It is indeed very unusual for a job-search book to include exhortations on self-examination and one’s mission in life. I suspect many readers of prior editions will be wondering if this year’s edition is really all that different from recent editions.
That is-is it really necessary to go out and buy the very latest model? In my opinion, if you have an edition just 1 or 2 years old, you are not missing much. Many of the changes in the “2017” version are related to internet services. For instance, the author includes the latest and greatest job search engines that were not listed in prior editions. As another example, the author includes updates to the very latest career counselors.
All in all, WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE 2017 is an outstanding work. It continues the string of top-notch career guides by the #1 expert in the field. Bolles explains at the end of the book, PARACHUTE is not written by committee—it is personally researched and written by the author.
If you are serious about your career, you would be nuts to not read this book (or at least a recent edition.) Advance Review Copy courtesy of NetGalley. I've never read any of the previous 'Parachute' editions, so I don't know how different this version is from previous editions, but I found the book to be interesting and informative. The book begins with a discussion about the changes in the job market since the 2008 recession. It then launches into the importance of the internet in a job search from the standpoint of posting your resume and from the standpoint of employers using the internet to research potential employees. There are useful chapters on interviewing and salary negotiation. But the meat of the book is in the the chapters on self assessment. These chapters give you the tools to decide what skills and interests you have and what careers best fit the intersection of those skills and interests. There are also chapters about how to choose where to work, various ways to choose or change your career, and a brief and very basic chapter on how to start a business. There is also a motivational chapter about how to deal with any handicaps you may have which points out the everyone has handicaps of one sort of another.
Following the main section of the book, there is an appendix or what is referred to as the 'pink pages'. The author is a christian and most of this section is about his faith and how it can impact being unemployed. Christians will find this section to be inspiring and helpful.
People of other faiths also may find it inspiring. Atheists and agnostics may find it off-putting as the author does not shy away from stressing his faith. Personally, I found that admirable and courageous. If you think you might be offended by this section, feel free to skip it. Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. When I found myself looking for a new job almost 6 years ago, I found what use to work no longer did! An interesting, yet frightening statistic from the book: From 1994 through 2008, roughly half of all unemployed job-seekers found jobs within five weeks.
Ony 10% of them spending more than a year looking for work. After 2008, a far greater proportion from 22%to 30% of all unemployed persons in the U.S. Are spending more than a year looking for work.
I have been with my current company for almost 5 1/2 years and in that time there have been so many changes when it comes to job hunting. It is nice to be able to have a guide that is revised yearly! I will warn you this is a large book (368 pages) but has so much information it is worth the read. Also, each chapter in the book is broken up into smaller parts, so easy to stop and start again as needed.
In this book there are tips on interviewing for a job, writing an impressive resume and how to negotiate your salary among other things. You can also just read the first chapter and then the parts that pertain to you. My favorite part about this book is the self-inventory.
Here you learn more about your skills, your strengths and weaknesses so you can find your dream job. 'I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.' Job hunting or changing your career path can be an incredibly stressful process.

The book is thorough, thoughtful and helpful. Many moons ago I read a previous edition of this book.
I picked it back up again per the advice of my mentor. And I’m glad I did. While I didn’t pour over every single word, I did devour the section on interviewing for a job. The chapters on interviewing and job hunting are especially helpful.
And the overall tone of this book is great too. Bolles is great at being encouraging without sounding delusional. How does he do this? Statistics, great anecdotes and solid advice. If you’re looking for work or you’re thinking about taking a different career path, it’d be worth your time to pick up a copy from your library. I know I’ll probably consult this book again.

Though I did find some advice obvious: being carful what you post on social media, but sadly, not everyone is aware of that 'golden rule'. Even if you think you know everything, Richard Bolles will prove you wrong. The layout of this book is very well done. The grammar book by celce-murcia and larsen-freeman pdf. You can easily skim for what you have questions about and flip to the exact advice you need. This is a great book for many different groupings of people: college grads, people looking for a job/career change, and those doing the hiring.
